Vivian John Woodward CLUB

This year 101 year from John Woodward's football carrier start is executed. He was good player. But by quantity of goals at a level of national teams, and by quantity of the matches which have been carried out for national team it he is not the leader. He has not got in the list of the best published Pele. But the E-success has defined, what exactly he is the greatest forward of centuries! And what about Pele? The Pele-sixth!

What is the -success? Or in this case success of the forward. We shall consider a simple problem.

Example 1. Let the player "A" has made 100 goals in 100 matches and the player "B" only 90 goals in 60 matches. If to judge on number of goals "A" is better than "B". But I think the majority would will prefer "B". From here like it is clear, that it is necessary to take an average of goals in one game to define the best.

Example 2. Let "A" has made one goal in 50 games and the player "B" in 100 matches would made in 90 goals. Using productivity we should prefer the player "A", But again I think the majority would will prefer the player "B". Thus, neither absolute, nor the relative number of goals unequivocally does not allow to estimate all cases from statistics of the players hammering in goals.

As an estimation of achievement of forwards it is offered to use E-success which is defined by product of result on productivity E-success = Goals * Goals / Games.

The Success of the player And is equal the first example 100 * 100 / 100 = 100. And success of the player 90 * 90 / 60 = 135

The Success of the player And is equal the second example 50 * 50/50 = 50. And success of the player 90 * 90/100 = 81

OPEN TO RIDICULE

Greatest-ever lists - be they footballers or movies, pop stars or motor cars - are never definitive. Their subjective nature means they are always open to criticism.

Pele's list of 100 (actually 125) greatest living footballers, published this week as part of FIFA's centenary celebrations, is no different. Pele may have been the greatest ever player but he has struggled to gain respect for his opinions since retiring as a player.

Pele's reputation will not have been enhanced by the list. On the contrary, he has done himself considerable damage.

It's easy to pick holes in such a list so here goes.

A few obvious omissions:
- Jairzinho, scorer in every round of the 1970 World Cup finals. (117 in Goal Succses List)
- Tostao and Gerson, two more stars from that wonderful 1970 team. (83 in Goal Succses List)
- Denis Law, arguably the greatest Scottish footballer of all time. (97 in Goal Succses List)
- Geoff Hurst, only man to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup Final.
- Francisco Gento, as key a figure in the Real Madrid side of the 1950s as Di Stefano and Puskas.
- Gunter Netzer, the brilliant West Germany midfield schemer of the 1970s.
- Tom Finney, one of the true greats of English football. And that's just for starters. (115 in Succses List)

Let me add to this "holes" list some peoples from Goal Success List

Rnk             Player              Country           Start End  Goal    GP   Success

1  Vivian John Woodward England           1903 1914   73     53    100,5
    2  Sandor Kocsis               Hungary           1948 1956   75     68    82,7
    5  Poul "Tist" Nielsen       Denmark          1910 1925   52     38    71,2
    7 *Ali Daei                        Iran                  1993 2004   87     119   63,6
    8  Gunnar Nordahl            Sweden            1942 1948   43     33    56,0
    9  Sven Rydell                   Sweden            1923 1932   49     43    55,8
  10*Jassem Al-Houwaidi    Kuwait              1992 2002   63     74    53,6
  11  Imre Schlosser             Hungary           1906 1927   59     68    51,2

What about Florian Albert (111), Bebeto (66),( Igor Belanov, Roberto Bettega, Oleg Blokhin (114), Dragan Dzajic, Ryan Giggs, Johnny Haynes, Ronald Koeman, Ruud Krol, Ian Rush (122), Matthias Sammer, Enzo Scifo, Peter Shilton, Allan Simonsen, Luis Suarez, Marco Tardelli, Jean Tigana, Paul Van Himst (112), Andoni Zubizarreta?

The apparent need to include as many countries as possible means Pele included two American women, Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm. But why not China's Sun Wen, voted FIFA's woman footballer of the 20th century? Would the Americans really have been that offended if Akers and Hamm had been omitted?

Similarly, would the Senegalese have minded if El Hadj-Diouf, that well-known Liverpool substitute, not appeared on the list? Ditto Turkey and Emre Belozoglu, Nigeria and Jay-Jay Okocha.

As for Hong Myung-bo, if Pele wanted to recognise South Korea's contribution to world football, why not Cha Ba-kum (45), the man long considered the country's greatest player and the first Asian to successfully play professionally in Europe, in Germany in the 1980s. Unlike Hong, who never played in Europe and is currently struggling to make his mark in US Major League Soccer.

Present-day goalkeepers Rustu Recber and Gianluigi Buffon are included, but not Jose Luis Chilavert or Pat Jennings. Roy Keane, the man who walked out on Ireland's 2002 World Cup squad, makes the cut, but not Johnny Giles. Alan Shearer is in there, but not Jimmy Greaves. And where Lev Yashin from the USSR?

Since retiring Pele has always been the arch diplomat, forever foresaking the controversial comment in favour of something less offensive. He tends to pitch his comments to whatever nationality his audience is. So picking 100 players for a global audience was always going to be problematic; somebody was bound to be upset.

But Pele - or rather, the brains trust at FIFA which suggested the names to him - has committed the terrible error of not wanting to offend people in football's emerging nations.

Instead, he has insulted the intelligence of everybody else.
